BARCELONA, SPAIN  [October 5] – Shortly after the launch of the International People’s Tribunal (IPT) for Palestine on September 28 by the International Peoples’ Front, International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS), and the People’s Coalition for Food Sovereignty, the Trump administration announced what it described as a “peace deal” that the Israeli government agreed to and Arab countries expressed support  for.

Within the 20 point roadmap titled “Peace to Prosperity”, it is clear that it serves as yet another ultimatum and ultimately an aggressive attempt by the United States and Israel to pacify the Palestinian resistance and  rid the Palestinian people of their personhood and political power, either through complete disarmament or extermination.

Reading Between the Lines of the 20 Points

Critics state that while the 20 points are composed in a manner that shows some pretense of care for the Palestinian people in Gaza, with words around self-determination and statehood carefully added by the Arab countries during their heads of state meeting with Trump during the UN General Assembly, it ultimately serves as a document to fully disarm the Palestinian people and thus end any actual ability to gain self-determination.

Azra Sayeed, Secretary General of the International League of Peoples’ Struggle, said, “Point #1 states that Gaza will be a ‘deradicalized terror-free zone’, but who is determining what is ‘terrorism’? Point #12 states that the people in Gaza have the freedom to leave and return, but the IDF will still be able to be stationed by the Rafah Crossing, so it will not allow that in practice.”

In addition to the flimsiness of the points to actually be enforced, it is clear the United States’ and Trump administration’s wider strategy has been to increase their military presence within West Asia as a whole, with the Arab countries that will be part of the so-called International Stabilization Force (ISF) getting nearly all of their weapons and military training from the United States. The “peace deal” is moreso a thinly-veiled threat, either if rejected or accepted by the Palestinian resistance.

“The position of the United States and those complicit with their support of Israel’s genocide such as the UK is to establish a viceroyalty in Gaza,” said Sayeed. “If they are proposing to have Tony Blair, who is responsible for the death of over a million Iraqi people, and Donald Trump to run the interim government, then it’s no different than what Mandatory Palestine was.”

The Ecocide and The Continued Resistance Against Occupation

Activists also assert that points #7 and #8 concerning the humanitarian aid and its distribution allow for parties outside of the United Nations and Red Crescent, such as the shadowy US-led Gaza Humanitarian Fund (staffed by a private mercenary army of US military contractors), to interfere in the actual aid distribution process. Consequently, it doesn’t also tackle the root causes of the famine, which is the genocide and moreover ecocide inflicted by Israel and the US onto the Palestinian people in Gaza.

“Over 98.5% of Gaza’s farmland has been deliberately decimated by the Israeli occupation. Ecocide combined with the withholding of food aid is the long term cause of the famine in Gaza,” states Edre Olalia, the president of the International Association of Democratic Lawyers. While hiding behind proclamations of this  ‘peace deal,’Israel continues to commit countless violations of international law and genocide conventions, showing that the true intention of the United States and Israel is to fully occupy and settle Gaza for their own reasons.”

President Trump’s language reflects Olalia’s point, consistently describing Gaza’s land as “a wonderful piece of real estate”. To that, Olalia states, “They have created a desert and called it peace, they are bragging about their plans to build high-rises for Western investors on the land they have decimated ecologically to pave this imperialist ‘real estate’ plan for Trump Towers.”

The Resistance Responds and Continues

Israel, even in its current ground invasion of Gaza City, has not won militarily against the united Palestinian resistance. The resistance has remained clear-eyed in its response. While negotiations are still ongoing among the different forces as of this writing, Hamas expressed initial willingness to release all living and deceased Israeli captives and discuss a new political settlement for Gaza. Though, it stated they would only do this if all Palestinian parties were at the table and there were assured guarantees for the end of the genocidal war and pull-out of all Israeli troops from Gaza. It is yet to be seen what the results of the negotiations will be, but the continued genocidal intent of the Israeli forces and leaders is now undeniable before the world, and the world will continue to mobilize to hold Israel accountable.

Even with the worsening genocide and ecocide, the resistance against the Israeli-US alliance has not lessened but only grown. Millions across the world are demanding their governments call an arms embargo against Israel to further isolate them and stop the genocide. The Global Sumud Flotilla, even as it has been intercepted by the Israeli military, shows a step forward in the international rejection of the Israeli genocide and moreover the occupation of Palestinian peoples’ land.

In the vein of the increasing political action of masses across the world and in Palestine against the Israel-US genocide and occupation, the “Right to Resist” International People’s Tribunal is part-and-parcel to the growing political resistance and solidarity movement for Palestine. People will be mobilized across the globe to hold this peoples’ court to hold Israel and the United States accountable, enforced not legally but rather through militant political action and to aid further action to charge both parties and others complicit on the streets and the battlefield. As Olalia stated during the launch event, “This Tribunal is not merely a legal action, but a political action.”
